How to pick the right pattern for different rooms?

Merino Laminates, February 12, 2025 Updated On : April 29, 2025

Every room in our home is unique and demands a different approach. While an underlying theme might unify the entire house, each area needs to be addressed individually so as to create a space that is functional, elegant and flexible to accommodate the changing needs of the occupants. While we may choose certain colours or upholstery for a space, we often make a mistake in choosing the right patterns and finishes and overlook the same. However, patterns and textures have a significant role to play in the overall design and appeal of the space. The visual and tactile experience that you create with textures and patterns can be a  powerful design element in your home. Choosing the wrong pattern or overdoing it can make the space look cluttered and chaotic, thus making it an unpleasant experience for the users. Here are some tips on applying different patterns across the house for a pleasant and wholesome experience:

1. Geometric patterns or floral motifs

When a wall treatment has geometric patterns, floral motifs or similar designs, one must always remember to use them in controlled quantities. They often become the focus, thus the rest of the space should be simple and minimal to create a balance. You can use patterns like the unique options from the latest Sampada collection from Merino Laminates as a feature wall in your foyer or as small panels in stand alone storage units like chest of drawers, headboard for a bed etc. These designs are elegant and add a unique character to the space. We can pick a colour of our choice from the design chosen and use that as a base colour. Often, light grey, soft pink, off white etc are used as a base which makes the patterns stand out elegantly. These patterns can be paired with wooden furniture, velvet finishes or something soft and elegant to create a feeling of opulence and luxury.

2. Concrete and stone finish

These finishes are great for a home that is minimal and designed around an earthy colour palette. We can use stone and concrete finish to highlight feature walls in foyers, partition walls in living rooms or for walls in a walk-in wardrobe. These are often paired with leather furniture, mirrors, rugged and exposed finishes to create a minimal yet enigmatic space. Colours that often work well with this finish range from greys to whites with a hint of colour to create a focal point.

3. Fluted

Fluted laminates are a great way to add minimal textures and patterns to a space. These can be used in living rooms, study rooms, home offices etc., as they are a timeless addition that can be paired with an array of other textures and patterns. From using velvet sofas to lush curtains, from sleek wooden furniture and airy curtains- a wide array of ideas can be paired with fluted laminates without making the space look chaotic.

4. Wood finish

If you are someone who enjoys a classic, timeless space- wooden finish is the ideal choice for you. Wooden finished laminates are extremely versatile and can be used across the house. However, depending on the size of the grain and colour of the wooden finish- other patterns and colours will have to be chosen carefully to create a balance. Often dark coloured wood is paired with lighter colours along the lines of beige, off white and light brown to create a pleasant, timeless look. Wooden finishes can also be paired with rattan for bedroom and living room and plain finishes for storage units, wardrobes etc. They are also a great choice for ceiling treatments as well.

5. Plain, coloured finishes

Another classic,-you can use plain laminates, be it as glossy or matte in kitchens, wardrobes and to finish standalone storage units across the house. While glossy laminates are great for kitchens, kids bedrooms, bar units, home theatre etc., matte coloured laminates are good for storage units, wardrobes, wall finishes etc. These can be paired with other laminates like patterned laminates, wood or marble finish to add more character to the space.

We hope that this detailed understanding on the application of patterns in different parts of a house will help you create a beautiful space. Our home is a place of rest and relaxation and our safe haven away from the chaos of the world outside. Hence, it is very important to create an environment that is soothing to the senses while being functional and efficient, which makes our life easier and enjoyable.
