5 kinds of storage that is a must in every home

Our home is our recluse and a place where we seek comfort and solace. It is often built using our savings that we have painstakingly accumulated over a long period of time, thus our home must be adaptable to the changing needs of our family as it grows and evolves. While the different parts of our home may continue to change with time, the one constant need that we always have is our need for storage. Be it a villa, a compact apartment, a home with young adults or a home with children- every home needs storage and lots of it! One can never have enough storage, and that is why we are listing 5 storage essentials that we all must include in our homes. Each piece is versatile and can accomodate different things as the needs of your family change. Here are our 5 must have storage systems for every home:

1. Chest of drawers

A versatile piece of furniture, a chest of drawers is highly functional and can be used anywhere across your home. Right from using it in the foyer, to using it as a toy storage for your kids- chest of drawers is a must have as it is elegant, timeless and can be used to store clothes, linen, toys- pretty much everything that you can think of! If you are on a budget, you can use a chest of drawers as a TV stand and later repurpose it as a standalone storage piece. While you can use classic wooden finishes for this unit, you can also go for something very unique like the traditional finishes in our Sampada collection. From flamboyant prints inspired by our rich Indian heritage, to subtle prints that are more modern, you can choose the design of your choice to elevate a humble chest of drawers to a signature piece in your home.

2. A standalone closed cabinet

While we have full length wardrobes in our bedrooms or walk-in closets as a standard practice, adding standalone cabinets across the house can be of great use to you as you tackle storage issues for day to day essentials. From a sleek, closed full length cabinet in your foyer that you can use to store essentials like raincoats, umbrellas, shoes etc to full lenght closed cabinets in the kitchen that you can use as a mini pantry- there are many ways in which you can use these versatile storage cabinets. You can also make a simple hanging closet which can be used to store your cleaning supplies like floor disinfectants, vacuum cleaners, dusters etc., and the same can be repurposed to store handbags, scarves or similar items.

3. Open shelves

While closed storage is always preferred as it really helps in hiding the clutter, some amount of open shelving is essential to make the design of the space more layered and interesting. Open shelves give a sense of openness and can be used to store books, travel souvenirs, collectibles and more. As we grow over a period of time, so do our preferences and open shelves are a great way to display your favourite things and give your space a personal touch. It is always endearing to see how a family with small kids might display the kid’s favourite toys when they are small, their trophies and wins as they grow older and replace the same with little kick-knacks that they may have picked on  their travels as a family.

4. Concealed storage

As mentioned earlier, closed storage is the best way to really hide away the clutter and there are only so many storage cabinets that you can add to your space without making the space look congested. However, this issue can be addressed by opting for furniture with concealed storage. From beds with storage underneath to ottomans and sofas with storage spaces, there are many products that you can choose from. You can store things that are rarely used, additional mattresses, pillows, cushions, bed linen etc in such spaces and clear away any messy stacks of unused mattresses, pillows etc.

5. Storage of utilities

While all of us are always thinking about storage in conventional places like the bedroom or the kitchen- we frequently pay no need to items extensively used around the house, which ultimately leads to a lot of clutter as we have failed to address the issue at hand. We may dedicate full length cabinets to store our clothes, but how often do we allocate a specific storage space for home linens, towels, first aid and upholstery? Likewise, we may dedicate ample storage in the kitchen for our utensils, but rarely do we consider storage for additional grocery, cleaning supplies, gardening essentials etc. It is ultimately these things that have no place for storage and are haphazardly placed leading to a lot of chaos and confusion. You can create storage in your bedside table, utility, dining area, corridors etc to address these storage requirements which will not only help you maintain a cleaner home, but it will also reduce the unnecessary need to search for anything that may be otherwise be misplaced.

With so many unique and beautiful finishes available today, you can create a lot of storage across your home without compromising the look of it. You can also tailor make slim storage units versus the conventional bulky ones to optimise use of the available space too.
