Design mistakes to avoid while designing a master bedroom

We all have certain aspirations for our home and want the same to inspire the design of our space. Out of the different parts of our house, the bedroom is our most personal space and thus, the design should reflect our personal style, aspirations and must offer the kind of comfort and ambiance that we want to relax and replenish our energy in. While some may find comfort in a minimal, bright space, some others might want an opulent theme with bold, pronounced design elements- irrespective of your personal choice, there are some things that must be avoided to ensure that you are designing a functional, beautiful and comfortable space. Here are some mistakes to avoid while designing your bedroom:

1. Choose the right colours based on the natural light available

The natural light plays an important role in determining the colours that you choose for a room. Never go for dark colours in a space that has less natural light. However, if you still aspire to use a specific dark shade, it can be used in upholstery, or as small elements in your decor while using a lot of lighter shades to make the space look large and airy.

2. Too many patterns in a closed space

Our bedroom is a place to rest our mind and body, hence it is advised to have a minimal amount of patterns so that the ambiance created is soothing to the mind. Having too many patterns in a closed space can make the space look claustrophobic and chaotic, and this can cause a lot of stress and keep the users of the space on the edge. You can use the block colours or subtle wood or stone grain from Merino Laminates to add some amount of patterns or colours without overdoing it.

3. The use of too many colours

Avoid having too many colours in the room, be it in the form of wall treatments, laminates or upholstery. As mentioned above, like overdoing patterns, having too many colours can have a negative impact on the mind of the users, making the space look cluttered, messy and chaotic. It is always ideal to have a simple colour scheme and follow the same throughout uniformly to create a comfortable and relaxing space.

4. Too many things or furniture

Another thing that must be avoided is the overclustering of the space. Having too many things, open shelves with a lot of showpieces, excessive usage of furniture, wall art or any products can make the space look small and cluttered. For a person to relax completely, the space should be minimal, elegant and well ventilated as all these factors impact the psyche of a person.

5. Spatial planning of your bedroom

Before you look into the finishing of the space, it is ideal to choose the most optimised spatial planning for your bedroom. If you have ample space, always go for a segregation of the dressing and sleeping area and create an exclusive walk-in wardrobe which is self sufficient with mirrors, seating, dressing, ample storage etc. Use the rest of the space to create a comfortable sleeping area along with some lounge chairs or sofa depending on the space available. If you have a small room, ensure that the wardrobes are well designed to allow easy circulation around the sleeping area, easy opening of doors and also make sure that the placement of the wardrobes does not allow mould or damp to build up.

6. Having generic and not personalised wardrobe layout

Another factor to bear in mind is the customisation of the wardrobes. Gone are those days when a standard wardrobe layout used to work for all. Today, we have to look at customising the internal layout of the wardrobe depending on the needs of each user.

7. Make it user-friendly

Another mistake that we often make is not considering the addition of ample modern amenities. Be it a simple addition of plug points, or the strategic plastic of switches, one must be mindful about the practicalities involved in the bedroom. Ample switches and two way switches for lights, fan etc., must be provided near both side tables, study or dresser etc.

8. Not layering the lighting

One of the most common mistakes which we all make is the lack of layering when it comes to lighting. A bedroom is a space that needs task lighting. While we definitely do need task lighting in spaces like the study area, dressing area etc., it is also important to have soft lighting in the sleeping area. Table lamps, or decorative soft lights must be paired with task lighting to ensure that we have the liberty to use both, depending on the desired ambiance needed at that point. Soft lighting is a great way to create a cozy, romantic and welcoming ambiance, and task lighting is much needed to work, study, get dressed or undertake any task- hence a balance of both is necessary in a bedroom.

We hope that these simple design tips help you create a pleasant and comfortable bedroom space irrespective of the size, scale and the opulence you desire. The challenge is not just optimising the space, but creating an atmosphere that promotes rest, relaxation and comfort.
