10 quick tips to design children’s rooms as per different age groups

Our homes are a safe haven and the space where the inhabitants can rest, replenish their energy and be themselves at their comfort. Hence, it is very important to lay equal emphasis on the design of every part of the house to ensure that it is the ideal space for the users and is an outcome of a sensitive understanding of their needs and aspirations. More often than not, every home has children- be it an infant, a toddler or a teenager, and the space for them must be designed with utmost care to create a wholesome space for them. From nursery design, to a teen room design, we give your ten children’s room design tips useful to design  your child’s room based on their age group.

1. Whether you are looking at a preschooler room design or something for older children, gender specific colours are passe. Neutral colours are a huge trend for all age groups, unless your child has a specific request for colours- in which case, the same colour can be used in combination with neutral colours. This gives the space a balanced, elegant look rather than it looking like a pink candy store, or a dark gaming den, which might seem too overbearing and it might  start looking out of place for the child after a while.

2. Your daughter could love pink, or your teenager could demand a dark grey bordering black! Instead of overplaying the same shade across the room, try to have a mix of sober shades of the desired colours which are less stimulating with hints of darker tones to create a pleasant balance. KIds can undergo multiple changes, mood swings and emotional moments and having a space that is tranquil and relaxing is more crucial to them than one may imagine. If you are looking at a nursery design, choose soft, mellow colours to create a serene and peaceful space for your little one.

3. When we are looking at children’s room design for preschoolers, you can opt for bright colours as they are at an age where they love vibrant colours, are filled with energy and love exploring and learning new things. Pair these colours with bright white, light grey and patterns inspired by nature to create a magical wonderland for the inquisitive little mind.

4. Use glossy laminates for kids of all ages as they are easy to clean for younger kids and have a more sleek and modern look that is great for a teen room design. You can find a wide range of super glossy, super sturdy laminates at Merino Laminates (https://www.merinolaminates.com/en/product_category/gloss-meister/)  in an array of colours suitable for all age groups.

5. Avoid too much design and jarring patterns in children’s room design irrespective of their age group. Kids today have a very hectic life and are already overstimulated by the colours, patterns, sounds and sights around them, which makes it important to create a space that is welcoming and relaxing. You can either bring in a minimal amount of patterns in the upholstery or use patterned laminates to create accent wall panels to add more layers to the design without being too overpowering on the overall appeal of the space.

6. Having good artificial lighting along with ample natural lighting is a must in every space dedicated to kids. Apart from this, don’t forget to add lights in wardrobes, entryways, above the mirror, etc as it makes the space more functional and easy to use. You can add soft wall or ceiling mounted lights if you are looking at a preschooler room design or a nursery design as floor or table mounted lights can be a hazard for them. However, you can add table lamps and floor mounted lamps in your teenager’s room to add more character to the space.

7. Have ample storage that is closed and wall mounted in rooms for kids across all ages as kids need a lot of space to store their books, clothes, toys and other essentials. Avoid free standing chest of drawers or cabinets, especially for smaller children as it can fall on them, thus posing a risk to the child. You can have a mix of open and closed shelving in teen room design as it is more fun and provides different storage options to the child.

8. Create a spatial plan that will adapt to the changing age of the child as structural changes and bigger changes can cost a lot more. From the correct placement of doors and windows to a functional bathroom layout, the spatial planning must be perfect by all means. You may be considering a nursery design right now, but the design of the room should be adaptable to serve the child when he or she becomes a teenager too!

9. Comfortable furniture that is ergonomically designed and age appropriate is a must in every children’s room design. From the height specific chair and study table suitable for a preschooler to a crib that is safe and comfortable in your nursery, the different furniture, especially the beds and seating should be safe and avoid physical strain to the child.

10. Leave enough space on the walls and in the design itself for the child to display their own identity rather than having too much going on everywhere. Especially when you are considering wall finishes or cupboard finishes in a children’s room design, ensure that you have ample surfaces where children can scribble, pin their drawings, or do more as they express their thoughts in their witty, unconventional ways! Glossy laminates, laminated walls and having soft boards is a great way to add low maintenance surfaces for your child.

We hope that these tips leave you with ample ideas to create the perfect design for your child be it a teen room design or a nursery design for your just born. It is a beautiful and heartwarming journey to craft a space for your child and creating a space that encourages positive growth and wellbeing should be the core of your design.
